Lakers’ LeBron James clarifies himself after calling Daryl Morey’s tweet ‘misinformed’

Stand with Hong Kong.” – “misinformed,” but thought the timing was ill-considered.“My team and this league just went through a difficult week,” James tweeted. “I think people need to understand what a tweet or statement can do to others. And I believe nobody stopped and considered what would happen. Could have waited a week to send it.”That position might best reflect the week the Lakers spent relatively isolated. In addition to several NBA events and practices that were canceled, personal appearances and other business meetings players had on their own were called off, adding to an air of tension threaded throughout the trip. The Chinese government has an authoritarian reputation, one burnished by its months-long dealings with Hong Kong protesters who have fought with police in the city streets. James’ comments seemed to reflect the unease some felt while in China – unsure of how the government or the people around them would act. It’s also worth noting that James, and several other NBA players, have large financial stakes in China in the form of shoe deals, endorsements and other business interests. The trip included a meeting between the players and NBA commissioner Adam Silver, in which players reportedly aired frustrations and asked not to speak to media for the remainder of the trip. While he typically is outspoken on a variety of social issues – his media company Uninterrupted is founded on the principle of giving athletes a voice – James said he didn’t want himself or any players to be put in a position where they would have to comment on a political situation they didn’t fully understand. Trail Blazers, Grizzlies advance to NBA play-in game; Suns, Spurs see playoff dreams dashed LOS ANGELES — Once again, the Lakers are back home – and with that, they’ve rediscovered their voices. The Lakers broke a week of silence after returning to American soil, deciding late in their five-day excursion through China that it would be best to not add fuel to a roaring controversy. But in his first comments since his return, LeBron James reserved his harshest criticisms for Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey, who he called “misinformed or not really educated on the situation” and implied had not considered how his tweet in support of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy protests – the catalyst for the storm overseas – would affect the Lakers, Nets and NBA personnel who spent a week wading through uncertainty.“Yes, we do have freedom of speech,” James said before Monday’s preseason game against the Golden State Warriors at Staples Center. “But at times, there are ramifications for the negative that can happen when you’re not thinking about others, when you only think about yourself.“I don’t want to get into a word or sentence feud with Daryl Morey, but I believe he wasn’t educated on the situation at hand, and he spoke. And so many people could have been harmed – not only financially, but physically, emotionally, spiritually. So just be careful what we tweet, what we say and what we do, even though we do have, yes, freedom of speech. But there can be a lot of negative that comes with that too.” Trail Blazers beat Grizzlies in play-in, earn first-round series with the Lakers “I’ve been to China maybe 15, 20 times,” James said. “And the reason I’ve always wanted to go back to China is because of the game of basketball. The game of basketball has brought so many different people together, so many different facets, so many different countries, different people that you would never ever expect. And that’s always been my goal, going over to China to be able to have the game … to bring people together in a positive way.”James didn’t play Monday night, just two days after they returned home from their bizarre trip.INJURY UPDATESThe Lakers said during Monday’s game that an MRI exam on Anthony Davis’ injured right thumb revealed only a sprain and he is day-to-day, increasing the chances of the All-Star big man being ready for next Tuesday’s regular-season opener against the Clippers.Davis sprained his thumb on Saturday against the Brooklyn Nets in China.Forward Kyle Kuzma, who has been dealing with a left foot stress reaction since August, was cleared for non-contact work after an MRI.Like James, neither Davis, Rajon Rondo nor Danny Green played in the game on Monday night, which Vogel said was his decision to give them rest.center_img “I think Adam has always been receptive about what the players and the coaches and the owners or whoever has comments about our league,” he said. “And at that particular time, I think he was receptive as well. And it’s a tough situation for Adam as well, to put out such a fire that he didn’t create, he didn’t start.”When asked about his thoughts on the political side of the events in China, James echoed Warriors coach Steve Kerr’s belief that he wasn’t educated enough to comment on the situation.“When I speak about something, I speak about something I am very knowledgeable about, something that hits home for me, something that I am very passionate about,” James said. “I felt like with this particular situation, it was something that not only was I not informed enough about, I just felt like it was something that not only myself and my teammates or our organization had enough information to even talk about it at that point in time, and we still feel the same way.”The biggest relief, James suggested, was actually getting on the court.“So many different events had been canceled throughout our time over there, and all we kept saying, ‘(expletive), we flew all these miles to come over to China, we would love to play the game of basketball in front of the fans,’” he said. “And that was our whole mind, to be able to prepare ourselves mentally.”Digging for silver lining out of the experience, Coach Frank Vogel said he was impressed with how his players conducted themselves overseas, and many of the canceled events were replaced by film study sessions and group dinners. He called the trip “really productive.”“It definitely highlights the benefits that we were getting from the time on the plane, the time in the hotel together, dinners together,” he said. “Especially with a team like ours that’s really new to each other, a lot of new faces, I think that will really benefit us.”Both Vogel and James said they would be willing to go back to China if asked.Related Articles Lakers, Clippers schedules set for first round of NBA playoffs How athletes protesting the national anthem has evolved over 17 years Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorlast_img read more
