Universities should make their courses more flexible to allow students tocarry on studying while they are in work, employment minister Malcolm Wicks hassaid.Speaking to the Universities’ Association of Continuing Education at RoyalHolloway College, Wicks told delegates that people should be able to study fora degree without giving up their jobs.He said, “The prospect of studying full-time for three years can be toogreat a commitment for people already in work and who do not want to break thefinancial and career pattern they have already established.” Student numbers in 2001-02 will be up by 100,000 compared with 1997-98,Wicks said.
