With 37 percent of the school’s population classified Spanish-speaking English Language Learners, the need to connect with e parents in their language is imperative. The program was designed to build relationships between community police officers who the students would see and interact with outside of school.“It is an honor to recognize these schools with the Family and Community Involvement Award,” said Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart. “As a former teacher and principal, I have seen firsthand the importance of positive family impact and community involvement. Barbados Enters into Oil Contract with Jamaican Oil Refinery Petrojam

first_imgBRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – The Barbados National Terminal Company Limited (BNTCL) says it is now getting its supply of oil from Petrojam in Jamaica following the closure last November of the state-owned PETROTRIN oil refinery in Trinidad and Tobago.BNTCL chairman, Alex McDonald said that the new agreement with Petrojam has resulted in Barbadians paying much less for fuel after the company had received several quotations and had been able to negotiate a better deal.“It was much more competitive than the PETROTRIN deal. The Petrojam, I can’t remember the actual number and I would not want to tell you the number that we negotiated for, but what the closure of the PETROTRIN refinery did was allow us to actually get into a position where we could be very competitive,” McDonald said.“The quantities of oil and the quantities of fuels that we bring in, in the scheme of the global makeup, are very, very small, so typically what we buy it for is the global price plus a premium. So depending on your consumption, the premium is lowered. Countries that use a lot of fuel pay at the global price, but the countries that don’t use a lot pay the global price plus a high premium,” McDonald said.“One of our mandates was to lower that premium. Unfortunately, the price of oil has been going up and down in the recent past and the mechanism has been very quick to adjust, so the average person would not have seen the benefit of the deal that we have struck. But I can tell you, had we not gone to this point, the price of fuel would be much higher,” he added. The Trinidad and Tobago government shut down the refinery after complaining of billions of dollars (one TT dollar=US$0.16 cents) in losses annually. It has since established Heritage Petroleum Company and Paria Fuel Trading Company that are undertaking exploration as well as handling fuel logistics and the energy trading aspect of the business respectively.Port of Spain said that Heritage Petroleum Company stands on the platform of expertise from the 100 years of oil and gas experience, while Paria Fuel Trading Company has access to strategic linkages and high-level market intelligence.”McDonald said that the contract with Petrojam has been in existence over the last six months and that while BNTCL had received numerous offers worldwide, the island’s relationship with Jamaica was a decisive factor in awarding the contract to Petrojam.“Through our competitive tendering process that went through about six months ago, we received a lot of quotations from all over the world and Jamaica had the best price for us and as a result, we went and we renegotiated an even better deal based on our relationships with them and our future plans. So that’s where we get our oil from right now,” McDonald said.Energy and Water Resources Minister Wilfred Abrahams told the online Barbados TODAY publication he was satisfied with the deal which had been brokered.“I am comfortable and I have entire faith in my chair and the management of the statutory corporation and I am comfortable that we are getting the best price possible. The Petrotrin closure affected us briefly, but it allowed us the opportunity to find a better deal somewhere else,” Abrahams noted.last_img read more

M-DCPS Parents Have a Choice in Their Children’s Instruction for the…

first_imgParents will also have the option to select My School Online (MSO), which will hold a student’s placement at the current school and will enable distance learning, directly under the guidance and in conjunction with their assigned teacher.  One of the major takeaways of the plan is that M-DCPS parents will have the flexibility to select their children’s fall enrollment plan based on their preference and comfort level between distance learning or physical in-school instruction, or a possible combination of both. For more information on the county’s reopening of schools, parent/guardians and students can visit reopening.dadeschools.net. Parents may also contact the M-DCPS Distance Learning helpline at 305-995-HELP. Forms will also be made available at the schools for pickup during those times. Parents of new students must complete the physical form and take it to the intended school of enrollment, in person. If parents cannot locate the form on the Parent Portal or the mobile application, they can visit reopening.dadeschools.net to fill out and email or print the form and return it directly to their child’s school. Form pickup and drop-off at schools will be available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Parents will have from today through Friday, July 10 to indicate which fall semester enrollment plan they are choosing for their child. Parents of current M-DCPS students can find the short questionnaire on the Parent Portal or the Dadeschools Mobile app. The Miami-Dade School Board approved a tentative plan for the proposed reopening of schools for the 2020-2021 academic year. On the questionnaire, parents will indicate whether they intend to have their child return to a brick-and-mortar school in the fall for up to five days a week, with the understanding that depending on the school building utilization, it may be through a hybrid model – blending in-school learning with a specially designed eLearning component. The school board obtained the feedback of parents, teachers and students; and the unanimous approval of a workgroup comprised of health, logistics and education experts, parents, community and business leaders, to establish its plan for reopening schools in the fall. last_img read more

Joey Barton Wins FA Ban Appeal

first_imgFormer Manchester City midfielder, Joey Barton, has had his 18 months ban from football activities for breaching FA betting rules reduced after an appeal.34-year-old Barton, who admitted placing over 1,200 bets in ten years, was banned in April and fined £30,000 by the FA.The Englishman’s ban has now been reduced by almost five months, initially to end by 25th October 2018, but now reduced until June 1st, 2018, after the appeal hearing at Wembley last week. Barton described the ban as “excessive”, saying: “I accept that I broke the rules, but I do feel the penalty is heavier than it might be for less controversial players.”In its ruling, the FA appeal board said: “It was clear that Mr Barton was not involved in any cheating, he did not influence any games and there was nothing suspicious about his bets.”“[The reduction] reflects the overall seriousness of the breaches and also the mitigation of Mr Barton’s addiction.” RelatedGranada CF vs Sporting GijonJune 30, 2017Similar postFIFA Bans Chelsea, Drops Heavy Fine On English FAFebruary 22, 2019In “England”Ex Liverpool Striker Cops Four Month Football Ban For Betting OffencesMarch 2, 2020In “England”last_img read more
